Catasetinae, a fragrant group of unique orchids that are part of the Cymbidieae tribe.
Clowesia, Catasetum, Cycnoches, Mormodes, and Dressleria are classified as members of the Catasetinae subtribe. The first four mentioned are used extensively in hybridizing.
Catasetum and Cycnoches are known for producing male, female and hermaphroditic flowers and projecting their pollinia at their pollinators, a unique characteristic to this orchid family. Clowesia and Mormodes will produce perfect flowers with both male and female segments.
Catasetinae typically grow in high temperature and humidity with distinct rainy and dry seasons associated with the rain forest environment and adjacent ecological zones of Central and South America. In nature, the species of these genera can, aided by their usual pollinators the euglossine bees, hybridize with each other. The result is great diversity and variation within the genera. With a proper understanding of their cultural needs, Catasetinae are generally easy to grow. Dressleria have their own special cultural needs.
